Office of Law Officers

The Legal Department makes appointment of the Law Officers to represent the cases of Government in the Courts. The appointment of Law Officers is governed by the Law Officers’ (Condition of Service) Rules and the Rules for the Conduct of Legal Affairs of the Government. The Government in Legal Department has appointed Ms.Hemantika Wahi as the Advocate on Record to represent the cases in the Supreme Court and has also appointed a panel of advocates for the work in the Supreme Court.

At the High Court level, over and above Advocate General, Additional Advocate General and Government Pleader, the Government in Legal Department has appointed about 30 Additional Public Prosecutors and 24 Assistant Government Pleaders to conduct the civil, constitutional and criminal cases in the High Court. The office building of Law Officers at High Court is known as “Kayada Bhavan” which is one of the most modern and computerized offices in the country.

The Government in Legal Department has appointed 23 District Government Pleaders for each of the judicial districts, 244 Assistant Government Pleaders and Additional Public Prosecutors, 13 Assistant Government Pleaders; whereas at the Taluka level and for the Courts of Magistrates there are about 236 Assistant Public Prosecutors and 14 Subordinate Government Pleaders appointed by the Government in Legal Department. The appointment of Public Prosecutors is made as per the provisions contained in the Criminal Procedure Code and the recruitment of Assistant Public Prosecutors is being made through Gujarat Public Service Commission.
